Doesn't my landlord's insurance cover my belongings?
No — your landlord's policy covers the building itself, not you. Your furniture, electronics, clothes, and everything else you own are not covered by it, and neither is your liability. Renters insurance (HO-4) covers your belongings, your liability if someone is injured, and your living expenses if your rental becomes unlivable.
What does renters insurance actually cover?
Three things: your personal property against theft, fire, and water damage from things like burst pipes; your legal liability if someone is hurt in your home or you accidentally damage someone else's property; and additional living expenses if a covered event forces you out. One important exclusion: flood is not covered — that requires separate flood insurance.
Does renters insurance cover hurricanes in Florida?
It covers windstorm damage to your belongings — so if hurricane winds send debris through your window, your damaged property is covered. If you're displaced, additional living expenses can cover temporary housing. The building itself is your landlord's coverage, and flood from storm surge needs a separate flood policy for your contents.
How much does renters insurance cost in Florida?
It's one of the cheapest policies you can buy — many Florida renters pay roughly $15–$30 per month (estimate). For less than a dollar a day, you protect everything you own plus your liability.
My landlord doesn't require it — do I still need renters insurance?
We strongly recommend it anyway. Many Florida landlords do require it, and even when they don't, the liability protection follows you everywhere — not just at home. A policy costs little, takes minutes to set up, and protects everything you own.
